The charity will be celebrating its 14th anniversary this year.  Over the years, the charity has achieved many of the objectives set in collaboration with Nuru Orphanage and Port Reitz School.  The current objectives can be found under ‘Our Aims’.

2020 bought great sadness to the team following the passing of our very dear friend and ‘Nuru’ Family member, Rachel Gregory.  Her love and laughter lives on through her family, Simone and son Ollie.  The money donated in her memory will be used wisely. We will update you on how it has been spent next year.

The UK based team continue to work with Hemed Mukui, a Kenyan citizen and volunteer who is based in Mombasa.  Hemed co-ordinates and ensures projects continue ‘on the ground’ in Kenya.  The team hope to re-visit the projects in Mombasa sometime soon.

This year, the charity provided 150 new mattresses and 150 pairs of bed sheets for Port Reitz Disabled School.  Mattresses with suitable covering for incontinence issues were provided many years ago.  It was essential that we prioritised the replacement of these mattresses to help maintain the children’s hygiene, comfort and dignity.

Earlier this year we agreed to support a very special staff member at Port Reitz DisabledSchool, Dorcas.  Dorcas is the school secretary and has worked at the school since 1980.  She is an inspiration to the children at the school and has battled with a physical disability that requires a wheelchair.  With Dorcas’ progressing age she was unable to self-propel herself in a wheelchair, impacting on her ability to work at the school.  The Charity funded an electric wheelchair; this has completely transformed Dorcas’ life.  She is able to continue to work at Port Reitz School and shine a light on the childrens’ lives.

This year, Amanda Burns is running for Nuru of Mombasa in the London Marathon in October 2021.  Amanda has been training with great focus and determination, with the aim to raise as much money as possible for Nuru of Mombasa.  Every penny raised will go directly to building a childrens’ playground at the school, where many children board (as it is too difficult to travel to the school daily). Please support Amanda and visit this link to sponsor her: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/amandaburns/1

Thank you to all who have donated their time and money to Nuru of Mombasa over the years.  Every penny raised has gone directly to the projects ‘on the ground’, with local workers and local prices guaranteed.  This has been made possible by the amazing dedication of Hemed Mukui.
